Vitamins for Prostate Health: A Quick Guide
/The following vitamins have been recommended to help with BPH or prostate cancer. But always talk to your doctor before adding any new vitamins to your regimen.
Saw palmetto
- No substantive evidence that it influences the course of either of these conditions
- Must double PSA if taking
Vitamins C, D and E, Selenium, Calcium and Lycopene
- studies have found inconclusive evidence
Too many vitamins can actually have negative effects:
- Avoid taking supplemental doses of Calcium above the RDA ( avoid > 1,500 mg of Calcium/day)
- Avoid high doses of folate/folic acid
- Omega-3 fatty acids have been shown to protect against prostate cancer
- Zinc usage > 100 mg/day has been shown to increase the risk of prostate cancer in two studies
