Planned Parenthood vs. Obamacare

Republicans in Congress are again demanding the government to cut all funding for Planned Parenthood which has been around for over a 100 years, providing women's health services. This latest uproar sparked after videos of officials from Planned Parenthood went record discussing compensation for providing fetal tissue from abortions. Other challenges the group is facing is with the Affordable Care Act. Formerly uninsured women are not less reliant on Planned Parenthood for access to birth control, abortions and other reproductive healthcare.

Even as Planned Parenthood has been a big supporter of Obamacare and President Obama's Health Law, the organization is losing clients as newly insured patients turn to medical providers included in their health plan networks.

Planned Parenthoot CEO expects the organization to treat 58,000 patients in 2015 which is decreased down from the 68,000 it treated in 2012.

Now in many ways, the Affordable Care Act has brought many positives to the organization. Even so, nationwide, Planned Parenthood client numbers are on the decline. Part of the drop in patient numbers can be traced to decisions by legislatures in Republican-leaning states like Texas to cut funding to affiliates beginning in 2011.

Many states provide broader wellness and preventive healthcare services including prenatal care, screenings for men, sex education for teens and smoking cessation counseling. Because the ACA hit and caused a decline, they needed to broaden their offerings.

Many are offering more services to men, older women and the gay and transgender communities. They also are expanding partnerships with other medical providers. One affiliate in the Midwest, for example, works with pediatricians who refer sexually-active teenagers interested in obtaining an IUD.
