Essential vitamins men should take as they age

As men age, certain vitamins and nutrients become essential to ward off age-related illnesses. The best way to get those vitamins and nutrients is to eat a healthy, well-balanced diet. While it is important to maintain this lifestyle always, it is especially important as we get older. This is often when any age-related health issues begin to develop.

Calcium. Calcium is a necessary for basic body functions like muscle contraction, nerve and heart functioning, and other biochemical reactions. Without enough calcium, the body will get it from your bones which makes them weaker.

Potassium. Potassium keeps your blood pressure under control. However, be aware that too much potassium can damage the gastrointestinal tract and the heart, and can cause potentially life-threatening cardiac arrhythmias.

Vitamin D. Vitamin D deficiencies have been linked to diabetes, heart disease, multiple sclerosis, and breast and colorectal cancers. These often begin to appear as we age. Vitamin D is essential in order for calcium to be absorbed.

Vitamin B12. This vitamin is essential for normal blood and brain function. Make sure to start getting more vitamin B12 after 40 and especially before turning 50. Try taking a supplement or multivitamin, and aim for the recommended 2.4 mg per day.

Omega-3 fatty acids. Research also shows that omega-3 fatty acids help lower blood pressure and LDL cholesterol levels, reduce the risk of heart disease, and help keep your cognitive function top notch.

Magnesium. Magnesium helps regulate blood pressure, which is especially important for people who are older and at risk of high blood pressure. A lack of magnesium has been linked to heart disease, diabetes, and inflammation. It also helps the body absorb calcium and control blood glucose.
