Vitamins for Prostate Health: A Quick Guide

The following vitamins have been recommended to help with BPH or prostate cancer. But always talk to your doctor before adding any new vitamins to your regimen.

  1. Saw palmetto

    • No substantive evidence that it influences the course of either of these conditions
    • Must double PSA if taking
  2. Vitamins C, D and E, Selenium, Calcium and Lycopene

    • studies have found inconclusive evidence

Too many vitamins can actually have negative effects:

  • Avoid taking supplemental doses of Calcium above the RDA ( avoid > 1,500 mg of Calcium/day)
  • Avoid high doses of folate/folic acid
  • Omega-3 fatty acids have been shown to protect against prostate cancer
  • Zinc usage > 100 mg/day has been shown to increase the risk of prostate cancer in two studies
