Natural Herbs: Cleanse the Liver

The liver is responsible for filtering blood from toxins and converts waste to be eliminated by urine. It creates bile to help digest fats and carbohydrates. With excessive alcohol intake, unhealthy eating and lack of physical activity, liver function can diminish. Ask your doctor for a liver function test, a simple blood test to identify the state of your liver. For maintaining liver health along with a healthy lifestyle and balanced diet, these herbs may be a consideration.

1. Milk Thistle: Experts recommend this herb above all others because it focuses on protecting the liver from daily toxins consumed and even ones we breathe in from air pollution. It is available in capsules or extracts. The active ingredient is called silymarin, an ingredient in the seeds. Studies have clinically proven that it improves liver function and repairs liver damage.

People with liver issues commonly take 300 mg 3x per day but it's important to talk to your doctor about the right dosage for you.

2. Dandelion: This herb is sometimes mixed with milk thistle. Some prefer extracts or teas. These are also a good source of most major vitamins, providing iron potassium and zinc. It's mostly beneficial for stimulating the production of bile to improve liver function.

3. Burdock root: This herb is a blood purifier as many Ayurvedic medicine doctors say. Similar to dandelion, it also stimulates bile flow while improving a weakened liver by purifying the blood and restoring damaged cells.

4. Artichoke: Also called cynarin, this herb assists with bile production and helps prevent gallstones.

5. Turmeric: Most clinically tested herb for inflammation, it also protects the liver since most ailments are inflammatory.
