Foods to Help With UV Damage
More than 3.5 million skin cancer cases are diagnosed each year. Over 90% of them are caused by the sun's ultraviolet rays (UVR). Ironically, most of the skin damage associated with aging (leathering, sagging, wrinkles, discoloration) is related to UV rays. This damage can happen all year long. Be mindful, whenever you venture out in the sun. But, we have good news. Believe it or not, there are certain foods that help with any uv damage. Here's the list.
1. Tomatoes: The redder, the better. We've talked a lot about lycopene and the antioxidants that tomatoes are rich in which help fight inflammation within the body but this nutrient also protects your skin from the sun. Try tomato paste for an even richer benefit.
2. Pumpkin seeds: Enjoy 12 grams of protein per cup of pumpkin seeds, twice as much as the protein in an egg. It's high in iron, potassium, phosphorus, magnesium and zinc to boost the immune system. The great source of zinc, a trace mineral that acts as a natural antioxidant and anti-inflammatory, protecting against UV radiation, enhancing wound healing, and boosting the immune system.
3. Green tea: One specific catechin, epigallocatechin-3-gallate (EGCG), is unique to green tea and is abundant as a result of the minimal processing through which green tea goes. Green and white teas are rich in polyphenols — particularly catechins — which have an inhibitory effect on cancer cells.
4. Olive Oil: As a healthier alternative to butter or margarine, this oil also helps with UV damage because of the high omega-3 fatty acids and antioxidants which act as anti-inflammatory to UV damage.
5. Red bell peppers: Collagen is very important in your skin and vitamin C helps build strong collagen and even fights wrinkles. Your first instinct might be to reach for an orange, red bell peppers contain even more youth-boosting plus they're low in sugar.
