DASH Diet Named Best Diet Overall

U.S. News & World Report has once again named the DASH Diet the 'Best Diet Overall.' DASH stands for Dietary Approaches to Stop Hypertension. This type of eating is mainly used for improving high blood pressure through an emphasis on portion size, eating a variety of foods and getting the right amount of nutrients. The food emphasized in this type of diet are whole grains, fruits, vegetables, low-fat dairy, fish, poultry, nuts and legumes. It does allow for small amounts of red meat and sweeter items.

For people who have explored this type of eating, many have found that easy to follow and can be followed long-term. It truly is a complete, well-balanced way of eating and is endorsed by the American Heart Association, USDA MyPlate, and the National Institutes of Health.

This diet discourages (not surprisingly) no white bread or other items made with white flours, refined white sugar, pasta and foods made with preservatives. It also encourages limitations on alcohol.

The DASH Diet also has shown to help with brain health.

This is the fifth time the DASH Diet has been touted as the best diet for people to try. DASH is based on research by the National Heart, Lung, and Blood Institute. According to the institute, 1 in 3 Americans has high blood pressure, which can lead to heart disease, heart failure, kidney disease, stroke and other health problems.
