6 Exotic Health Foods to Try This Spring

Spring has sprung! (Well, almost…) And even though we may not have seen the last of the snow in New York, our palates are searching for something new and vibrant.

Below are some unusual, but tasty, super foods to try this season:

1.       Goji

Long touted as a panacea (or cure-all) in Chinese medicine, Goji berries are potent antioxidants and packed with nutrients.  They are a great source of protein, and said to improve circulation and enhance libido.

2.       Quinoa

So maybe quinoa isn’t that exotic these days, but I bet you didn’t know it’s NOT a whole grain. This grain-like food hailing from South America is actually the seed of a green leafy plant.   It is a complete protein, high in manganese, niacin and fiber.  Manganese helps keep bones strong, while niacin helps lower cholesterol.

3.       Spirulina

This immune booster, is popular addition to many green juices and smoothies.  The oceanic blue-green algae dates back to Aztecs and is choc-full of proteins, vitamins, and nutrients.  Calcium, niacin, potassium, magnesium, B vitamins and iron to name a few!

4.       Flax

This seed is high in fiber, helping keep those who eat it stay full longer.   Flax is also packed with omega-3 fatty acids that promote bone health and work as anti-inflammatory agents.  Other benefits studied include flax’s ability to help control hypertension and lower cholesterol.

.       Tumeric

This spice gives curry its characteristic yellow color and has the ability to soothe skin disorders, calm the nervous system, and potentially fight cancer because of its powerful anti-inflammatory effects.  Research on the active ingredient, curcumin, in turmeric also shows the spice might suppress fat tissue growth.

6.       Chia

These tiny seeds serve a 1-2-3 punch of protein, omega-3s and fiber.  Chia’s high fiber and protein content make them ideal for weight loss.   They are a great source of energy, with very few calories.
