5 Food Recalls from 2015

1. RECALL: Possible E. coli in 14 Brands of Bottled Water

Niagara Bottling has issued a recall of its spring water product produced at two of its Pennsylvania production facilities. The recall lasted from June 10-June 18, due to evidence of E. coli at the spring source. No one has reported sickness and the company has issued information and directions for consumers who have questions or concerns. You can find that here

2. Sabra Hummus Recalls 30,000 Cases Due to Listeria Contamination

Hummus lovers everywhere were shocked when Sabra announced this back in April. the full list of products contaminated can be found here. Listeria can cause serious infections. Listeria is found in soil and water and it can be found in animals including cows. It's also in raw and unpasteurized dairy and can grow in cold temperatures.

3. Kraft Macaronic and Cheese Recalls Due to Metal Bits

The recall was issued on March 17 over concerns about metal pieces in the box. It roughly affected over 240,000 boxes.

4. Recall on Cumin Due to Peanut Ingredient 

We've discussed the dangers of undeclared ingredients before and let this be a key example. Being a common cause of many recalls, a spice company issued one after peanut proteins were found in products that claimed to have none. For those with serious peanut allergies, this can be extremely harmful. The FDA and USDA continues to investigate this recall spread, being that the cumin is not just sold on its own but can be found in meat products. 

5. Trader Jones Issues Recall on Dry Goods

Salmonella has been found in dried goods and recently Trader Joe's had to recall walnuts because of the bacteria. The CDC estimates that there are about 1.2 million salmonella cases each year making for almost 19,000 hospitalizations. Whole Foods had to recall their brand of garlic powder due to the same issue.
