Try These Foods to Fight Heartburn

Heartburn is a familiar for many, causing a burning sensation in the chest, behind the breastbone.  This feeling is usually exacerbated by bending over or lying down.  About 75% of Americans suffer from acid reflux and don’t know it, it occurs when stomach acid backs up into the esophagus.  The symptoms of heartburn or acid reflux include:

·         Burning pain after eating

·         Pain that worsens when lying down or bending over

·         Indigestion

·         Lump sensation in your throat

·         Hoarseness

·         Sore throat

You should see a doctor if heartburn occurs more than twice a week, or if your symptoms persist despite the use of over the counter medications.  You should also see a specialist is you start to experience difficulty swallowing.

What foods could help you fight heartburn?

Fortunately, there are some foods that naturally fight off heartburn and neutralize acid that causes acid reflux.  Some recommended foods include:

    • Oatmeal – it is a great breakfast and snack food; it’s filling and doesn’t cause reflux
    • Ginger – one of the best foods for acid reflux; used throughout history as an anti-inflammatory and treatment for GI conditions; ginger root is easily peeled, sliced and diced for easy cooking
    • Aloe vera – is a famous natural healing agent and also seems to treat acid reflux; can be used in recipes as a thickener or for congealing liquids; is sold as leaves or in liquid form in grocery stores or health food stores
    • Salad – but be vigilant to avoid onions and tomatoes, high-fat dressings and cheese; use dressings minimally
    • Banana – they’re a great snack, have a neutral pH and are a staple for people with acid reflux
    • Melon – has a neutral pH
    • Fennel – great for acid reflux and seems to improve stomach function
    • Chicken and turkey – must be skinless (skin is high in fat); is a staple food for those with acid reflux; should be baked, grilled or sautéed
    • Fish and seafood – should be baked, grilled or sautéed
    • Roots and greens – including cauliflower, broccoli, asparagus, green beans; all great foods for those with acid reflux
    • Celery – has no calories, is an appetite suppressant and an excellent source of roughage
    • Parsley – has been used historically as a medicinal herb to settle stomach and aid digestion; use for seasoning and garnishing
    • Couscous and rice – both outstanding foods for acid reflux; try to eat complex carbohydrates
